The Independent Commission of Investigations (INDECOM) has launched an inquiry into the fatal shooting of a man by police during an alleged shootout in Spanish Town early Thursday morning.
The deceased has been identified as 38-year-old Anthony Kemar Richards, otherwise known as ‘Ganja,’ who resided on March Pen Road in Spanish Town.
According to preliminary reports, at approximately 5:30 a.m., a police unit conducted a cordoned search operation in the March Pen Road area. During this operation, police entered a premises where Richards was present. Authorities allege that Richards, armed with a handgun, opened fire on the officers, prompting a return of gunfire.
Richards sustained injuries during the exchange and was subsequently transported to Spanish Town Hospital, where he later succumbed to his wounds. A nine-millimeter pistol, along with a magazine containing one round of ammunition, was reportedly recovered from the scene.
