Police and military personnel are maintaining a heightened presence in sections of Arnett Gardens following the fatal shooting of Stewart “Bing” Burton, a 33-year-old man described by authorities as an area leader.
Burton was attacked and fatally shot sometime after 11 a.m. on Thursday along Collie Smith Drive near Eight Street.
Reports indicate that Burton was walking along the roadway when two armed men on a black motorcycle approached and opened fire, hitting him multiple times. Burton was rushed to the hospital but was pronounced dead on arrival.
Senior Superintendent Michael Phipps, head of the Kingston Western Police, confirmed the incident, stating that Burton had been associated with a gang operating out of the Top Jungle area and had previously been on the Kingston Western Police’s most wanted list.
According to a source, the shooting unfolded in full view of a group of children participating in a tree-planting activity along Collie Smith Drive.
The children were shaken by the incident, according to eyewitnesses, and many of them are currently dealing with trauma from seeing the violent act.
