Tropical storm conditions to affect Jamaica

The Meteorological Service of Jamaica has issued a warning as a weather system moving toward the island is forecast to intensify into a tropical depression later today. This development indicates that Jamaica could experience tropical storm conditions within the next 24 hours.

At 7:00 a.m., the system, currently named Potential Tropical Cyclone Number 18, was approximately 355 kilometers (220 miles) south of Kingston. The system is advancing northward at a pace of 11 km/h (7 mph), with a northwestward shift in trajectory anticipated later today. It is expected to continue moving in this direction over the following days.

The cyclone currently has maximum sustained winds near 55 km/h (35 mph), with occasional stronger gusts. Forecasters expect it to become a tropical depression or possibly a tropical storm by later today, with further strengthening projected afterward.

On its present path, the disturbance will likely move toward Jamaica throughout the day, reaching the island by late Monday evening or early Tuesday morning. Following its approach, it is expected to continue its course toward the Cayman Islands by Tuesday night or early Wednesday.

The Meteorological Service warns that as the system approaches Jamaica, it could bring heavy rainfall and strong, gusty winds, particularly across the eastern and southern parishes. Residents in these areas are advised to prepare for potential flash flooding, and the risk of landslides is heightened, especially in vulnerable sections of the island.

Jamaicans are encouraged to stay updated on weather advisories and take necessary precautions.
